Exploring Meaning, Freedom, and Authentic Living

Existential-Phenomenological Therapy offers a philosophically grounded approach to exploring the deeper questions of human existence. Rather than viewing difficulties as symptoms to be removed, this approach understands them as meaningful responses to the realities of being human — including questions of meaning, freedom, choice, identity, isolation, and mortality.
At London Trusted Therapy Harley Street, we recognise that many people come to therapy not only with anxiety or low mood, but with a sense of disconnection, loss of meaning, or uncertainty about how they are living their lives. You may feel out of alignment with yourself, overwhelmed by responsibility or choice, or unsure of who you are becoming. Existential therapy provides space to explore these concerns thoughtfully and without judgment.
Phenomenological work focuses on understanding your lived experience as you experience it, without imposing labels or diagnostic categories. Together, existential and phenomenological approaches allow for a deep exploration of your values, perceptions, and sense of self, supporting you in living with greater authenticity, responsibility, and meaning.

Who Is This Approach For?

For Individuals

Existential therapy supports people who are struggling with questions of meaning, purpose, freedom, and mortality. If life feels directionless, empty, or stripped of meaning, this approach explores those experiences directly rather than treating them as symptoms to be removed.

It can be especially helpful during periods of existential crisis, often triggered by loss, major life changes, illness, or a growing awareness of life’s limits. Existential work helps you face these realities while clarifying how you want to live in response to them.

This approach is well suited to anxiety and low mood rooted in inauthentic living, isolation, or the weight of choice and responsibility. Rather than eliminating these experiences, existential therapy supports you in developing more authentic, meaningful ways of being in the world.

For Couples

Existential couples work explores fundamental questions about the relationship: Why are we together? What meaning does this relationship have? How do we maintain authentic selves whilst being intimately connected? If your relationship feels stuck in roles and routines that no longer feel meaningful, existential work can help you rediscover or create new meaning together.

You might benefit from this approach if you're facing questions about commitment, if the relationship feels stale or inauthentic, or if major life events have forced you to re-evaluate what your partnership means. Existential work helps couples confront difficult truths whilst creating authentic connection.

This approach is valuable when freedom and togetherness feel in tension — when one or both partners feel trapped by commitment or disconnected by too much independence. Existential therapy helps navigate the paradox of maintaining authentic selves whilst creating genuine intimacy.

For Families

Existential family work addresses questions of meaning, values, and authenticity within the family system. This is particularly valuable when families are navigating major transitions — adolescence, children leaving home, retirement, diagnosis of serious illness — that force confrontation with existential realities.

Families benefit from existential work when they're questioning their purpose and values as a family, when rigid roles have created inauthenticity, or when family members are struggling to maintain their individual authenticity whilst staying connected. This approach helps families create genuine meaning together whilst honouring each person's freedom and individuality.

The Four Ultimate Concerns

Existential therapy addresses four fundamental ‘givens’ of human existence:

Death

The awareness of our mortality and the anxiety this creates. Death is the most fundamental existential given — we all will die, and this awareness profoundly shapes how we live. Death anxiety can manifest as fear of dying, but also as questions about whether our life matters, whether we're using our time meaningfully, and what legacy we'll leave. Facing death awareness can paradoxically lead to living more fully.

Freedom and responsibility

We are fundamentally free to create our lives, and this freedom can be both liberating and terrifying. With freedom comes responsibility — we cannot ultimately blame others for our life choices. This can create anxiety ('What if I choose wrongly?'), but also empowerment. We explore how you navigate freedom, where you feel constrained, and how you take responsibility for authoring your life.

Isolation

Despite our relationships, we are ultimately separate and alone with our experience. No one can fully know what it's like to be you, and you cannot fully merge with another. This existential isolation differs from loneliness — it's an unavoidable aspect of being a separate consciousness. We explore how you relate to this aloneness and how you create meaningful connection whilst respecting this fundamental separateness.

Meaninglessness

Life has no predetermined meaning or purpose — we must create meaning ourselves. This can feel liberating (you get to decide what matters) or anxiety-provoking (what if nothing matters?). We explore what gives your life meaning, how you create purpose, and how you navigate the responsibility of being your life's meaning-maker.

What Makes Our Approach Different?

Existential-phenomenological therapy doesn’t view you as disordered or broken. Your struggles are seen as meaningful responses to the challenges of existence. Anxiety about death, questions about meaning, feelings of isolation—these are viewed as natural, even necessary, aspects of being fully human.
DBT provides a complete toolkit of specific, learnable skills across four domains. You don’t just learn to “think differently”—you learn concrete techniques you can use in the moment when distress hits.
This approach draws on rich philosophical traditions (existentialism, phenomenology) that take seriously the big questions of human existence. It offers depth and intellectual rigour whilst remaining practical and applicable to daily life.
Rather than just reducing symptoms, we explore what makes life meaningful for you. The goal isn’t merely to feel better but to live more authentically and purposefully.
This approach takes seriously your freedom to choose and create your life. It empowers you as the author of your existence whilst acknowledging the anxiety that comes with such responsibility.
The phenomenological stance means we honour your unique experience without imposing external interpretations. Your perception is respected as valid and worthy of exploration.
Whilst effective for anxiety, depression, and other difficulties, this approach particularly suits people facing fundamental life questions, transitions, and the search for authentic living—concerns that might not fit neatly into diagnostic categories.

Evidence Base and Effectiveness

What to Expect in Existential-Phenomenological Therapy

We begin by exploring your lived experience and the existential concerns bringing you to therapy. We’ll attend to how you experience yourself, others, your world, and your difficulties. We’ll explore which of the ultimate concerns are most alive for you and how you’re navigating them.
Sessions involve deep, reflective dialogue exploring your experience, choices, values, and the meanings you make. We might explore questions like: What gives your life meaning? Where do you feel most authentic? How do you navigate freedom and responsibility? What are you avoiding? What matters most to you?
The relationship between us becomes a place for authentic encounter. We relate as two people meeting genuinely, not as expert and patient. This real meeting allows you to explore authenticity, connection, and being truly seen.
Unlike structured therapies, existential-phenomenological therapy follows your concerns as they emerge. We trust the process of exploration itself to be therapeutic, believing that increased awareness and authenticity naturally lead to change.
As therapy progresses, the focus is on integrating insights into your daily life. How will you live differently? What choices will you make? How will you create meaning? The goal is moving toward more authentic, purposeful living.

Our EMDR Therapists

Beginning Your Journey

Existential-phenomenological therapy requires willingness to explore deeply, to question, to sit with uncertainty, and to face difficult truths about existence. It’s not a quick fix or a set of techniques — it’s a profound journey of self-discovery and authentic living. You don’t need answers or clarity coming in; you need curiosity and courage to explore.

This approach particularly suits people who are philosophically inclined, comfortable with ambiguity, and seeking depth rather than symptom relief alone. It works well for those facing transitions, searching for meaning, or feeling that something fundamental is missing or inauthentic in their lives.
Our therapists have specialist training in existential-phenomenological approaches and bring both philosophical depth and human warmth to the work. We understand that facing existential realities takes courage, and we’re here to accompany you on this journey of discovery and authentic living.

From Inauthenticity to Authentic Living

Existential-phenomenological therapy isn't about fixing you

It's about helping you live more fully, authentically, and meaningfully. It's about moving from avoiding fundamental questions to courageously facing them. It's about creating your life with awareness and intention rather than drifting according to others' expectations or avoiding responsibility.

You can move beyond just coping

If you're seeking depth, meaning, and a more authentic way of living rather than simply managing symptoms, we're here to explore alongside you. Together, we create space to reflect on how you want to live, and how to move forward with greater clarity and responsibility.
